Reinvesting in the Bronx

CUNY Lehman College launches the Bronx Recovery Corps to ensure students can contribute to the economic recovery in the Bronx.

Throughout New York City, the Bronx has endured the greatest challenges since the pandemic began. As a community of many service industry workers, West Farms was labeled the epicenter of economic fallout by September 2020—where 26% of largely Black and Latino residents, or 1 in 4, remained unemployed. The Bronx also suffered from the highest COVID-19 hospitalization rate in the city.

Deutsche Bank Americas Foundation provided a founding grant, as part of the bank’s broader education strategy, to empower and position students to play a key role in revitalization. The Bronx Recovery Corps will also boost available resources to Bronx employers, while diversifying the talent pipeline.

The Bronx Recovery Corps is based on an innovative, comprehensive four-part model: engaging employers in identifying in-demand, high-wage jobs; building partnerships with community-based organizations to boost revitalization impact; earning academic credit; and providing a paid opportunity to develop professional skills.
